Applications of cartography and satellite imagery are numerous. Following are some of the most popular applications where S2S team has huge expertise using digital mapping and satellite imagery.

Activities based on the use of satellite images and information handling by a Geographical Information System are able to develop an Environmental Monitoring System for oil industry. The most important environmental impacts of the onshore Oil Exploitation are related to oil spills and vegetation and soil loss due to the construction of the infrastructure (accesses, pads, pipelines, etc). With multispectral satellite images is possible to map the oil spills and infrastructure development in any area over the world. This allowed analyzing the development of pollution and infrastructure growth.

Satellite imagery and aerial photographs play an important role in general mapping, as well as GIS data acquisition and visualization. Estimating terrain relief from spatial stereoscopic pairs of images using image matching algorithms is a validated technique. It has been used for more than 15 years operational to produce Digital elevation Models, i.e. altitudes given on a regular ground grid.

Digital image classification uses the spectral information represented by the digital numbers in one or more spectral bands, and attempts to classify each individual pixel based on this spectral information. For example, Land cover, vegetation, soil types and water quality map can be generated from satellite images.

The synergistic use of multi-temporal remote sensing data and advanced analysis methodologies results in the possibility of solving complex problems related to the monitoring of the Earth’s surface and atmosphere. Today, we have big data bases of satellite images which give us the opportunity of study changes in land cover maps, urban growing, environmental index, etc.
GIS applications are very diverse, S2S has the capability of carry out any kind of project. Other applications are: shipping detection for maritime security, DIFSAR (Differential Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar) is very useful for subsidence studies.
